Wynton Kelly Trio and Wes Montgomery – Smokin' at the Half Note (5 songs, 1965)

About This Music Release

Smokin' at the Half Note is a 5-song live album by the Wynton Kelly Trio (Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, Jimmy Cobb on drums) featuring guest Wes Montgomery on guitar. It was released in 1965 by Verve Records (original catalog V/V6-8633).

This iconic recording captures Montgomery at his absolute peak, backed by the legendary Miles Davis rhythm section from the Kind of Blue era (Kelly/Chambers/Cobb). Primarily recorded live in June 1965 at the Half Note jazz club in New York City (with one studio track added on September 22, 1965 at Van Gelder Studio), it showcases blistering interplay, extended solos, and pure swinging energy—often hailed as one of the greatest jazz guitar albums ever made.

Produced by Creed Taylor and engineered by Rudy Van Gelder, critics call it "essential" for its drive, confidence, and joyful vibe. Pat Metheny famously said it "taught me how to play."

Firmly in the jazz genre with hard bop and post-bop styles, it's a must-own classic—recommended alongside Montgomery's Full House or Kelly's Riverside work.
