The Ahmad Jamal Trio – The Awakening (7 songs, 1970)

About This Music Release

The Awakening is a 7-song music release by The Ahmad Jamal Trio (Ahmad Jamal on piano, Jamil Nasser on bass, Frank Gant on drums). It was recorded on Feb. 2–3, 1970 at Plaza Sound Studios in New York City and released in 1970 (July in some sources) by Impulse! Records (catalog AS-9194).

Ahmad Jamal (1930–2023), the influential American jazz pianist, was renowned for his elegant touch, dynamic use of space, and sophisticated arrangements that inspired Miles Davis (who covered Jamal tunes) and generations of hip-hop producers (e.g., "I Love Music" sampled on Nas' "The World Is Yours"). This album—his Impulse! debut—captures the trio at a creative peak, blending originals with inventive covers of standards and modern compositions in a denser, more adventurous style than his 1950s work.

Critics hail it as a masterpiece of understated elegance, whimsy, and groove—often ranked among the best jazz piano trio albums ever, with high replay value and heavy sampling influence.

Firmly in the jazz genre with post-bop influences, it's essential listening—recommended alongside At the Pershing: But Not for Me or Herbie Hancock's early work for its masterful restraint and swing.
