Harold Land – The Fox (6 tracks, 1960)

The Fox is a 6-track music release by Harold Land. It was released in 1960.

This classic hard bop album by American tenor saxophonist Harold Land was recorded in August 1959 in Los Angeles and features a stellar quintet: trumpeter Dupree Bolton (making his fiery recording debut), pianist Elmo Hope, bassist Herbie Lewis, and drummer Frank Butler. Originally issued on the short-lived HiFi Jazz label and later reissued by Contemporary Records in 1969 (produced by David Axelrod), it's widely regarded as one of Land's finest works and an underrated gem of the era.

The session delivers energetic, swinging performances with tight ensemble work and standout solos—particularly Bolton's blazing trumpet lines that steal the show on uptempo burners like the title track. Blending originals from Land and Hope, the album clocks in around 40 minutes of vibrant post-bop improvisation, praised for its excellent sound and enduring influence among jazz enthusiasts.
